Brexit. The rumblings of Project Fear are beginning once again. The papers are filling their pages with crystal ball predictions of doom, gloom, depression and a British populace in crisis. The apple orchards of Kent covered over by millions of tonnes of concrete to create the largest lorry park in existence. No food, no medicine and ships queuing up across the oceans, waiting to unload their mountains of rotting perishable goods, denied access to efficient customs inspections and unable to provide everything the UK public has previously taken for granted as the necessities of everyday living.
What to do about it? I suggest covering your health bets as an immediate strategy, before the products that can keep you in glowing physical shape vanish from the shelves of your local health food shop and Amazon’s vast delivery force gets bogged down in those apple orchards. With luck (how’s that for a strategy of successful governance for what was once a mighty Empire?!) the bickering politicians will come to some sensible solution, though based on the past months performance, I don’t personally hold out much hope. Brexit means Brexit and all that – but it sounds to me that other than moving rapidly to the countryside, and turning your garden into a vegetable patch to feed you when the shelves of our supermarkets run dry - or stocking up on dried foods and tins to last you through the Mad Max scenario of possible civil unrest, your strategy for survival should also include the ultimate natural health medicine chest. Stock up with it all now and be confident you can see your family through the years of pharmaceutical drought that may follow any eminent ‘no deal’ crash out of the EU.
Here are my top 5 healing miracles for your Brexit medicine chest, chosen to prevent the majority of everyday illnesses and more serious health problems too.
Remember when we were young? Back then Vitamin D was an insignificant vitamin that kept your bones strong. Way down the list after the 'important' vitamins - C, the Bs, A and E. Now all these years later we find that Vitamin D is the most important of them all. And confusingly, that it's not really a Vitamin at all but a hormone that nearly every tissue and cell in your body has receptors for. And without sufficient levels you just don't function as well as you should. Three quarters of us are estimated to be low in vitamin D and most of us don’t get sufficient levels from our diet, the sun or even from supplementing. But up your levels you must, especially in the darker days of winter. Raid the health food stores now and buy it in liquid form if you can. Liposomal is even better: take it alongside a meal rather than on an empty stomach for optimal uptake.
Tea Tree Oil
I love the smell of tea tree. Even as I unscrew the lid of the bottle, I can feel my body - and my mind - preparing to get better. There is something primal about its healing potential: the body seems to recognise it at a cellular level. Made from the leaves of the Australian tea tree, it has anti-fungal and antiseptic properties. You can use it for a wide variety of ailments. It wipes out infection in cuts, burns and blisters, helps heal psoriasis and acne and has been shown to stop MRSA in its tracks. Tea tree oil works as effectively as any over the counter cream for ringworm and athlete's foot.
Having an issue with lice? If you have small school age children in the house, tea tree oil has been shown to be more effective at clearing head lice than its pharmaceutical cousins. Gargle with it to stop a sore throat, or inhale a cloud of tea tree laced steam to clear your sinuses. It's a remarkable all-rounder. Read the label before use: never swallow it and if you have sensitive skin, always dilute tea tree in a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil.
Oregano oil capsules
Reach for these the second you notice yourself flagging. Oregano oil, made from the oregano plant, is one of the most potent immune boosting medicines out there. A capsule a day will wipe out any bacteria or viruses trying to take hold anywhere in your body. It has been shown to be effective against salmonella and other germs in repeated tests.
Are you worrying about graceful ageing - or frankly, just ageing? Oregano oil is full of the anti-oxidants that counteract the damage caused by free radicals. It is said to keep you younger – so well worth a shot if it can fight off the horrors of a facelift. It helps with weight loss and reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If you are approaching, or in the middle of, a difficult menopause, oregano oil also reduces and eases the symptoms.
I met an elderly arthritic doctor in a health clinic a few years back, and it was he who first introduced me to the remarkable healing properties of oregano oil. He had written scores of books and theses on every medicine and protocol you could imagine, but what he carried with him at all times was a small bottle of oregano oil. He rubbed it religiously into his aching joints every few hours and claimed it was the only remedy he had found to stop the pain. He used it for every symptom that he had and called it the Holy Grail of healing.
This is another medicine cabinet ‘must’. In this world of ours where antibiotics are more and more failing to protect us from the strongest forms of pathogens, you need to have something up your sleeve in times of crisis. Colloidal silver is your answer. It wipes out most of the worst offenders. One test pitted it against no less than 650 different types of virus, and not one survived to tell the tale. Its list of other benefits runs on - psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections, cuts and grazes, sinusitis. It also sorts painful ear infections.
Best of all, it works for that irritating red/pink eye infection that nothing seems to stop in its slow tracks. A friend rang me last week to complain how uncomfortable and obvious her infection was. She was going on a date in two days and really needed it to magically disappear. Did I have any suggestions? A few sprays later, the inflammation was down and she made it clear-eyed to her dinner.
Last, but certainly not least, is the amazing (there really is no other word for it) HealGel. This is a clear gel developed by a team of plastic surgeons for a range of skin issues. I first came across it last year, when, entirely out of the blue, a raised, red, lumpy thing appeared on my chest, just underneath the area where I wear my favourite necklace. Hugely obvious and not very pretty. I immediately thought it must be skin cancer, and took myself off to the doctor for a closer inspection. She assured me it was fine, and then depressed me a lot, giving me its long Latin name and telling me that there was nothing whatsoever that could be done to improve its appearance. I was apparently stuck with the fluorescent red lump forever.
Not being one to settle for a bad situation, I ran the problem past a number of wise friends. One of them told me about HealGel. I googled it and promptly bought a small pot to give it a go. I kid you not, after 3 days my lump was flat, and no longer bright red. There was still a slight discolouration of the skin where it sat, but three months later there is nothing to show – no sign at all that it had temporarily threatened to blighted my chest forever.
The same team also make a product that reduces signs of ageing in the face, and one that reduces dark circles under the eyes. For men too, they have a solution for skin dryness after shaving.
Best of luck with Brexit
So there you have it and hopefully these stalwarts will see you and your families through. And if all goes smoothly, and they manage to draw that rabbit out of the hat, you will still have a kit that will equip you for the worst that winter and the onslaught of viral and bacterial attacks can throw at you. (And don’t forget my two pharmaceutical favourites either – the lovely fluorescent green Night Nurse that guarantees a solid night’s sleep however bad your flu, and my trusty Anadin Extra. Neither of them healthy in the slightest, but hard to consider having to survive without.)
It’s all about balance after all!
