Government leaks, ambitious political leadership candidates and the threat of the 5G debacle rising up to match the chaos of Brexit - the soap opera that has become our daily media reality has come up with a new season topic that will run and run. Are Teresa May and her cabinet really going to point the Huawei ‘loaded gun’, as Washington described the UK’s apparent agreement to press ahead with the technology that much of the Western world is rejecting, at all 60 million of us?
The issue of 5G is much, much more serious than you may think. It’s not just national security that’s at stake but a much less widely reported story. The unspoken danger here, for you personally, is far greater than any breach of technology security - your health is on the line.
The U.K. is currently in negotiations for rolling out 5G throughout the land - and Huawei and its spy network and possible security breach is a complicated enough matter, but far more worrying are the possible health ramifications of the technology behind 5G. This is the issue that no one is talking about. Is it because they simply don’t know?
So what is 5G?
G stands for Generation. This is the fifth generation of mobile phone technology, each one faster and more efficient than the one that went before.
1G – 150MHz/900MHz – These were the first big in size wireless mobile phones. Often poor quality reception and battery life. 1980-90
2G – 900MHz - connections give a download speed of around 0.1Mbit/s. Dependent on strong signal and allowed the use of texting for the first time. 1991-2000.
3G – 1.6-2 GHz – digital broadband. These were the first ‘smartphones’ allowing web browsing, email and video downloading with speeds of up to 8Mbit/s. 2000-2010.
4G - 2-8 GHz - speeds increased download speeds 500 times faster than 3G to around 100Mbit/s -but there are so many different devices connected to these two networks that they don’t cope effectively with the demand. 2010 to today.
5G mobile networks are targeting a download speed of over 1,000Mbit/s (1Gbit/s), more than 100 times faster than 4G, and will be able to handle a far wider range of new technologies - for example driverless cars, manufacturing sensors and connected home devices. 5G can effortlessly cope with more devices on a single router and uses frequencies that are less crowded than the ones used by 3G and 4G.
The 5G roll out plan involves installing short masts (rather than the tall cell towers we see today) that broadcast their radio waves as widely as possible across the country - using telephone poles, street lamps, siting them on roofs and in schools, in parks and on government owned properties. A far wider spread than ever before – everywhere.
What are RF-EMF’s?
You may have heard of radio-frequencies and electro-magnetic frequencies. But do you know what they are?
Electromagnetic fields are the electric and magnetic frequency fields produced by electrically charged objects – your electricity supply, your plug sockets, computer, dishwasher, clock radio or electric blanket. The higher the voltage of the technology, the stronger the field it creates, and these fields are present even when there is no electricity flowing. When the current does flow, when you switch on a plug for instance, the magnetic fields simply get stronger. You can measure them with an inexpensive gauss meter bought off the internet.
Radiofrequency radiation (RF) is the transfer of energy by radio waves and microwaves. Radiation levels range from high-frequency to low-frequency across a spectrum known as the electromagnetic spectrum and RF sits at the low end of this spectrum. Your mobile phone, TV, radio, microwave and any radar appliances in particular give off RF.
Put simply, the higher the frequency within the RF radiation portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, the more dangerous that frequency is to the human body – in fact to any living creature.
So are these frequencies safe?
The Government, and the telecom companies, would have you believe that they are.
3G, 4G and 5G use frequencies between 1-300 gigahertz. What is not being obviously factored in in the current discussions – or at least not as reported by the press to date - is the effect that 5G in particular has on the human body. The frequencies generated by 5G are far higher and faster than the radiation levels transmitted by the 2G, 3G and 4G networks. The telecom companies are currently attempting to raise government radiation limits to cover these increases, but the science available clearly indicates they should think again. Never before will the human race have been bombarded by rays of such high levels.
More than 240 scientists have now appealed to the United Nations to reduce public exposure to 5G rather than increase it. They are calling for a moratorium on 5G concluding that, ‘RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment’.
Study the peer reviewed published science on the effects of these radio frequencies and electro-magnetic fields for yourself. Many of these studies are based on our existing technology - 100 times less powerful than the frequencies that are coming - but there are also recent 5G specific papers published that have little positive to report from a health point of view.
Knowledge is power they say. Read the following reports for yourself, and make up your own mind.
5G and Cancer
The cancer epidemiology update is a comprehensive review of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and their effects on humans and animals. The review concludes that scientific evidence is now adequate to conclude radiofrequency radiation is carcinogenic to humans (Miller 2018).
The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) Study on Cell Phone Radiation found ‘clear evidence’ of cancer, heart damage and DNA damage in a $30-million study designed to test the basis for federal safety limits (NIEHS). Several previously published studies also concluded that RF can ‘cause’ cancer. (Hardell 2017, Atzman 2016 and Peleg 2018).
‘Mortality by neoplasia and cellular telephone base stations’, a 10 year study by the Belo Horizonte Brazil Health Department and several universities in Brazil, found an elevated relative risk of cancer mortality at residential distances of 500 meters or less from phone masts and antennas (Dode 2011). Shortly after this study was published, the city prosecutor sued several mobile phone companies and requested that almost half of the city’s antennas be removed.
Most studies of mobile phones and brain cancer have looked at cases of people who have used the phones for five years or less. Every serious study, however, that has examined people who have used phones for 10 years or more, finds a 50 - 800 percent increased risk.
Many of the more publicised studies focus on the link between cancer and mobile phones, but there are also direct connections with damage to the brain, the nervous system, on sleep patterns, and on fertility levels.
Nature: if it’s doing this to the birds, what is it doing to you?
‘A review of the ecological effects of RF-EMF’ reviewed 113 studies, finding RF-EMF had a significant effect on birds, insects, other vertebrates, other organisms and plants in 70% of the studies (Cucurachi 2013). Development and reproduction in birds and insects were the most strongly affected. A study focusing on RF from antennas found increased sperm abnormalities in mice exposed to RF from GSM antennas (Otitoloju 2010). Studies on bees have found behavioural effects (Kumar 2011, Favre 2011), disrupted navigation (Goldsworthy 2009, Sainudeen 2011, Kimmel et al. 2007), decreasing egg laying rate (Sharma and Kumar, 2010) and reduced colony strength (Sharma and Kumar, 2010, Harst et al. 2006). Research has also found a high level of damage to trees from antenna radiation (Waldmann-Selsam 2016).
Your children’s health - and your own - is in your hands
A 2019 study of students in schools near cell towers found their higher RF exposure was associated with impacts on motor skills, memory and attention (Meo 2019). Examples of other effects linked to phone masts in research studies include neuropsychiatric problems, elevated diabetes, headaches, sleep problems and genetic damage. A 2010 landmark review looked at 56 studies and found biological effects even at very low intensities, with an impact on reproduction, on permeability of the blood-brain barrier, behaviour, cellular and metabolic changes and an increased cancer risk (Lai and Levitt 2010).
5G: what it does
According to Martin L. Pall, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences Washington State University who has researched the topic in depth, there are eight principal dangers (all highly evidenced and researched) of the effects of this EMF/RF exposure on the human body. I quote him here:
‘1 Attacks our nervous systems including our brains leading to widespread neurological/neuropsychiatric effects.
2 Attacks our endocrine (that is hormonal) systems.
3 Produces oxidative stress and free radical damage, which have central roles in essentially all chronic diseases.
4 Attacks the DNA of our cells, producing single strand and double strand breaks in cellular DNA and oxidized bases in our cellular DNA. These in turn produce cancer and also mutations in germ line cells which produce mutations in future generations.
5 Produces elevated levels of apoptosis (programmed cell death), events especially important in causing both neurodegenerative diseases and infertility.
6 Lowers male and female fertility, lower sex hormones, lower libido and increased levels of spontaneous abortion and, as already stated, attack the DNA in sperm cells. Sperm counts have dropped by more than 50% throughout the technologically advanced countries.
7 Produces excessive intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i and excessive calcium signaling.
8 Attacks the cells of our bodies to cause cancer. Such attacks are thought to act via 15 different mechanisms during cancer causation.’
Is the above the reason that rates of mental health, cancer, and infertility are on the rise? And that’s even before 5G reaches our shores. The Israeli, Finn and French governments have all issued 5G health warnings. The British Government has not. For me the health crisis that 5G may well trigger is something we all need to flag now, and explore in considerably greater depth before it’s too late. National security seems to me a secondary issue. Back in 2013 George Osborne said ‘Some nations wouldn’t want Chinese investment in critical infrastructure...we welcome it.’
But do we - we the people that is, rather than we the politicians?
Matt Hancock, current Health Minister for the people of this land, I hope that you are included in the 5G discussions, and please pay close attention before you cast your vote. Logic would dictate enormous care in the decision making and a resounding ‘no’ to the technology - but perhaps other agendas rule? Huawei is the largest individual donor to the Internet, Communications and Technology All Party Parliamentary Group. Turning down Huawei in favour of Nokia or Ericsson could set the introduction of 5G back years.
Perhaps pray very, very hard that that happens?
